1. History
There is a long history behind the Riot, and it comes as an evolution of my personal quiver. Every year, I’ve been tweaking and the result is the sick new line of wave crossover sails. It's kind of funny to me that there is suddenly a whole range of short sails out there from various brands. I guess, at Vandal, it safe to say, we feel flattered, yet annoyed. The bottom line is that we invented and pushed his concept for years before anyone really took it seriously. That's given us a real advantage in the development. They are not quite as compact as the old Boxer, but as a trade-off, they have killer wind ranges by comparison. The typical problem with a low aspect setup, is keeping the upper wind ranges balanced, without too much load on the backhand. With the new Riot, we've really achieved a killer balance that doesn't get unwieldy in the big puffs. Of course there is an interesting history behind the graphic as well. The bomb tagging on that sail was all done by hand by one of our partner graffiti artists. The sail is a sweet ride that defines the latest thinking in windsurfing.
2. Tuning
Rig setup is quite similar to any raf wavesail. The rigging is a snap, and the relatively forgiving luff curve is fairly mast tolerant. The sail works very well over a large range of settings, but we find it really shines with a little less downhaul. The new multi-fin boards take a bit more torque out of the rig to keep them driving, and the Riot can be rigged pretty full to complement the modern setup. When it gets breezy, it's no big drama to yank on a bit more downhaul to start to free the head and flatten the upper third. This gives the sail the ability rip through a huge variety of conditions.
3. General Rigging Tips
A. don't be afraid to try a bit less downhaul
B. any mast will work, but grab a vandal 100%C RDM if you want perfection
C. sail sets best with a bit of positive outhaul tension
